IS IT NORMAL TO HAVE SWELLING AFTER MICRONEEDLING?
What to Expect from Your Go-To Skin Rejuvenation Treatment
Microneedling is one of my absolute go-to treatments at Revisions Aesthetics + Wellness for creating smooth, radiant, healthy skin. Using tiny, controlled punctures, this treatment stimulates collagen and elastin production, improving fine lines, acne scars, pore size, hyperpigmentation, skin laxity, and overall texture.
A little swelling afterward is completely normal, and it’s a sign your skin is healing and rejuvenating. Let’s talk about what to expect.
Why Swelling Happens After Microneedling
Swelling is a natural response to the controlled micro-injuries created during treatment. These tiny punctures trigger your skin’s healing cascade, sending extra blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the area.
This inflammation is what starts collagen and elastin production, the building blocks of firmer, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin. Mild swelling is a positive sign that your treatment is working exactly as it should.
How Much Swelling Is Normal?
Everyone’s skin responds differently, but here’s what I usually see:
Mild swelling is common in the first 24 to 48 hours.
Moderate swelling can occur after deeper sessions, especially when treating scars or sensitive areas like under the eyes. This may last up to 72 hours.
By day two or three, swelling typically begins to subside, revealing smoother, rejuvenated skin. If swelling persists or seems excessive, always reach out so I can check in.
Other Common Post-Treatment Reactions
Alongside swelling, you might notice:
Redness: Similar to a mild sunburn, usually resolves in a day or two.
Sensitivity: Skin may feel warm or tender.
Dryness or flaking: Light peeling is normal as your skin renews itself.
Tiny red capillaries: Can appear but fade in several days.
All of these are temporary and part of your skin’s natural healing process.
Tips to Reduce Swelling and Support Healing
While swelling is normal, these steps can make recovery more comfortable:
Follow post-care instructions: Your customized routine at Revisions supports optimal healing. Nothing on your face other than the goodies I give you after your treatment!
Stay hydrated: Water helps your body repair and flush inflammation.
Avoid heat: Skip hot showers, saunas, and direct sun for the first 48 hours.
Sleep elevated: Use an extra pillow to prevent fluid buildup in the face.
Eat anti-inflammatory foods: Leafy greens, berries, and omega-rich foods support healing.
Take it easy: Avoid strenuous activity or anything that increases blood flow to the face for the first few days.
